Hair Rejuvenation

More than many other dermatologic conditions, hair loss reflects your entire well-being, inside and out, and losing your hair can be terribly upsetting. Hair loss can result from many different causes, including genetics, hormonal changes, use of specific medications, injury to hair follicles through chemotherapy or traction alopecia, trauma and stress, or malnutrition.

Just as there are various hair loss causes, you also have several different treatment choices, including topical and oral medications, light therapy, and surgery. In recent years, platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, has emerged as a successful option for reducing hair loss in many patients.

What Is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma is a pioneering medical treatment that works by supplying the body with natural proteins, cytokines, stem cells, and other bioactive growth factors.

Though regenerative medicine was once in science fiction territory, scientific research and technological advancements within the past two decades have provided the medical community with valuable new insights into how the body’s natural healing processes work. By initiating the first step of coagulation, elements in your blood called platelets play a crucial role in your body’s ability to heal wounds.

PRP contains three to five times more platelets than those found in normal circulating blood. Physicians began realizing the benefits of PRP in dental treatments, wound healing, and skin grafting in the early 1990s. Then, approximately ten years later, the use of PRP expanded into orthopedic and sports medicine, including arthritis remedies, treating joint and tissue damage, and long-term pain management. More recently, PRP treatments have begun revolutionizing the hair loss industry.

How Do PRP Hair Restoration Treatments Work?

Your blood consists of two main components: red blood cells and plasma. Plasma contains white blood cells and platelets, which have a wealth of factors that stimulate hair follicles and prolong the hair cycle’s growth phase. When used for hair loss, PRP prompts dormant hair follicles to reactivate and start growing healthy hair.

Each PRP hair restoration procedure is all-natural and a medically and scientifically backed option. As a promising non-surgical therapy for patients who are experiencing hair loss, PRP has proven effective at increasing hair count and hair thickness or caliber, in addition to improving hair growth. That’s why this hair loss treatment has rapidly gained worldwide popularity over the past several years.

PRP treatment for hair loss begins with a simple blood draw from your arm, just like you would expect during a routine checkup or blood donation. The vial of drawn blood goes into a machine called a centrifuge, which spins rapidly to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. Then, one of our experts can inject the PRP into your scalp at the follicular level.

Who Can Get PRP Hair Loss Treatments?

Nearly any healthy adult experiencing hair loss is a good candidate for PRP treatments, but those with more recent hair loss tend to respond best. That’s because it is more challenging to revive hair follicles that have lain dormant for a long time.

PRP may be an ideal intervention for men and women with androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness), a genetically determined form of hair thinning that typically occurs along the top of the head. Our specialists do not recommend pursuing PRP therapy for hair loss for people who have a disease such as lupus or a thyroid problem, as these conditions will continue causing progressive hair loss as time goes on. If you are taking blood thinners, please note that your platelets will be less effective, which will adversely affect your PRP results. Please refrain from taking Advil, ibuprofen, aspirin or any other elective platelet inhibitor such as vitamin supplements.

Risks of PRP for Hair Loss

Having blood plasma extracted and using it to stimulate your hair follicles might initially sound like a risky approach, but for the most part, there are virtually no side effects from the treatment. Since PRP comes from your blood, the chances of an allergic reaction, rejection, or any biocompatibility issues are minimal.

During the procedure, most patients report only a mild pain or sensation of pressure at the injection site and do not require any anesthetic. We are pros at making it more comfortable by using ice and a vibrational tool to quickly provide comfort during the quick treatment that lasts about 5-10 minutes. If you experience any discomfort after your PRP treatment, you can take an over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen to manage it. Slight bruising may be another side effect, but it usually resolves within the first two weeks or so. PRP injections also require little to no downtime for recovery, and most patients can go back to work the same day.
